Herbalist Sebastian Kneipp once said that growing Sage in your garden is like having your own pharmacy at hand. Some research suggests it helps with long-term memory, creative thinking, and attention span. Sage's botanical name comes from the Latin word "salvere", which — to no one’s surprise — means, "to be saved." Sage is my savior, its scent, my origin story.

There are over 900 species of sage worldwide, with 19 of them having their origins in California — growing along the Pacific Coast, crossing valleys, and threading their way up our mountain slopes. Among these native species are Hummingbird Sage, Pitcher Sage, Black Sage, Purple Sage, Mexican Purple Sage, and White Sage — all currently growing wild at the Estate after a Winter’s rain.

The abundance of Sage in the Garden inspired the aroma of this candle. Deeply cleansing and camphorous, softened by a hint of sweetness.

A Note About Candle Care: When burning your candle for the first time, allow it to burn for 2 to 3 hours, until the top layer of the wax has completely melted. This will prevent the wax from tunneling around the wick. When burning the candle after the first burn, do not let it burn for over 3 hours at a time.

Ideally, we recommend keeping the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times to prevent the candle from emitting smoke or the wick falling into the wax.

After each burn, see that the wick is centered in the wax. This will also ensure that the glass does not overheat. The wick and flame should never be touching the glass. When approaching the end of the candle, leave ¼ inch of wax unburned and ensure you are not burning the candle for more than 3 hours. The glass can get overheated without the presence of wax and break.

More About the Maker: With the help of our friends and a network of incredible farmers, we grow sage for soap and tomatoes for candles. We harvest salt from the cliffs of Big Sur and press olive oil from very old trees and keep bees for honey. In all of it, we’re invested in pleasure — for ourselves and our clients and friends — because we think it’s a path to radical change and cataclysmic beauty.
