Made in Vietnam
Marou began in 2011 when two French friends — Samuel Maruta and Vincent Mourou — discovered Vietnamese cacao and couldn't let it go. What followed was one of the great chocolate origin stories: a bean-to-bar operation built entirely in Vietnam, working with over 500 small-scale cacao farmers across seven provinces, paying prices 65% above commodity market rates, and investing directly in the farms that make the chocolate possible. Marou is one of the only chocolate makers in the world making chocolate at origin — not importing beans to be processed elsewhere, but roasting, refining, and finishing everything in Ho Chi Minh City, returning the full value of the crop to the country where it grows.
Each Marou bar is named for the Vietnamese province whose cacao it celebrates — Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Nai, Ba Ria, Lam Dong, Dak Lak — and each tastes like the landscape it came from. Drought years draw sharper citrus notes. Heavy rains bring fruit and spice. The controlled chaos of fermentation adds subtle surprises that no formula can replicate. The New York Times called it "the best chocolate you've never tasted." We think they were right.
