More About the Maker: Nishiguchi Kutsushita was founded in 1950 by Katsuji Nishiguchi, who began with a single hand-operated knitting machine in Katsuragi, a city in Nara Prefecture — the region that to this day produces roughly 60% of all socks made in Japan. What started as one machine has grown into an operation running more than 130 knitting machines, staffed by a team with generations of hands-on expertise. The brand is now led by third-generation director Isato Nishiguchi, who draws on his own travels for each collection's colors and designs while holding to the founding philosophy.

That philosophy is captured in the brand's motto, "hakuhito omoi" — thinking of the person who will be wearing the socks. It shows up in how thoroughly the brand vets everything: materials, designs, knitting methods, even pricing. Rather than chasing seasonal trends, Nishiguchi Kutsushita focuses on perfecting a smaller set of designs meant to last, favoring natural, skin-friendly fibers — recycled cotton, Egyptian cotton, eco silk, hemp, linen, wool, and cashmere — over synthetics. Their recycled cotton is made by reclaiming the fine leftover cotton fibers from yarn production and re-spinning them into new yarn, rather than letting that material go to waste.
