More About the Maker: Qantu was founded in Montreal by Elfi Maldonado and Maxime Simard, whose story began in Lima, Peru, where the two met on a dance floor in 2007. The couple eventually settled in Montreal, and in 2014 took their first trip to a cacao plantation — Alto El Sol, in northern Peru — where the passion and pride of the farmers they met left a lasting impression. Researching cacao further, they discovered bean-to-bar chocolate made by small artisan makers, and were struck by how dramatically flavor could vary from one bar to the next. They ran their first chocolate batches back in Montreal in 2016 and officially launched Qantu the following year.
The name comes from Quechua, the native language of the Peruvian Andes — Qantu (pronounced "Kantu") is the national flower of Peru and Bolivia, and a traditional symbol of unity and hospitality in the Amazon region. Qantu works exclusively with Peruvian cacao, buying directly from farms and cooperatives with no brokers or importers involved. Elfi and Maxime visit the farms themselves whenever possible, evaluate the beans firsthand, and build the kind of direct relationships that support both fair post-harvest practices and the preservation of native, heirloom Peruvian cacao varieties. The range centers on single-origin bars that showcase the diversity of Peruvian terroir — from Chaska's bright red-fruit character to Chuncho's roasted hazelnut notes — alongside creative inclusion bars like their spiced Silk Road blend.
